Who Francesco Datini was

Who Francesco Datini was

Francesco Datini was a merchant whose home and business are at the centre of the museum’s story. The museum also explains the charitable institution established through his will after his death. Palazzo Datini occupies a city block bounded by present-day Via Rinaldesca, Via Ser Lapo Mazzei, Vicolo del Ceppo and Vicolo del Porcellatico.

Construction of the palace began in 1383. Its location near Prato’s municipal headquarters mattered to Datini: he intended the building to serve a specific public role. In 1409 and 1410, the palace hosted King Louis II of Anjou of Naples on two occasions, with considerable ceremony and expense.

Inside the historic house

Inside the historic house

The museum occupies ground-floor rooms converted for museum use in 2009. The palace’s narrow-front interior includes a botanical garden described by the City of Prato as one of the earliest of its kind in Italy.

Displays cover the merchant’s home and include restored painted decoration, images, everyday objects, artworks from the 14th and 15th centuries, and original letters from Datini’s archive. Italian- and English-language captions accompany the displays. Florentine artists including Agnolo Gaddi and Niccolò Gerini decorated the palace inside and out; the exterior paintings are now very damaged.

Why the house matters to Prato

Why the house matters to Prato

Palazzo Datini brings together the history of a merchant’s household, a historic building and a charitable institution. The ground-floor museum focuses on Datini, his residence and the Ceppo dei poveri di Prato, while the State Archives of Prato is also housed in the palace.

The City of Prato describes Casa Datini as an outstanding example of a medieval merchant’s palace, near the municipal headquarters. The Prato tourism board includes the palace in its city-break itineraries. For another perspective on the city’s heritage, you can pair a visit with the Museo di Palazzo Pretorio.
