Where the castle stands
Castello dell’Imperatore stands in the historic centre at Piazza delle Carceri, beside Santa Maria delle Carceri. The Ministry of Culture lists its address as Piazza Santa Maria delle Carceri, 59100 Prato (PO).
The castle sits in a pedestrian area. Nearby public transport includes bus lines 1+, 3+, 9 and 4, and paid parking is available nearby. If you’re planning a wider walk through the centre, the guide to one day in Prato offers another way to plan your route.

A short history of the fortress
Frederick II of Swabia ordered the castle’s construction after 1240, with a design attributed to Riccardo da Lentini. It is described as a unique example of Swabian architecture in central-northern Italy.
Frederick II never came to Prato. His vicar in Tuscany lived in the fortress and guarded a route between the Holy Roman Empire and southern Italy and Sicily, passing through the Montepiano pass and Bisenzio Valley.
An opening on the eastern side linked the castle to the defensive circuit at Porta Fiorentina through the Cassero, a fortified passage on two levels that has since been restored. Its elevated passage offers views toward Florence and Montalbano.

Architectural details to look for
The castle has a square plan, square corner towers and white alberese-marble walls. Look up to see its Ghibelline swallow-tail battlements, restored in 1933.
At the entrance portal, Swabian lions are carved in serpentine—often called green Prato marble—and alberese. Inside the towers, works by contemporary artist Salvatore Cipolla symbolically evoke the era of Frederick II.
The upper walkways are reached by spiral staircases with alberese steps. From them, visitors can look out over the city and surrounding area.

Visiting the castle and its grounds
You can explore the courtyard and reach an upper walkway that runs along three sides of the castle’s perimeter. The route up passes through a spiral staircase in a tower, so allow time for the climb as well as a look around the courtyard.
The castle is open every day except Tuesday. From 1 April to 30 September, hours are 10:00–13:00 and 16:00–20:00; from 1 October to 31 March, hours are 10:00–16:00. The upper walkway closes 45 minutes before the castle. Admission is free, and booking is not required. An elevator is available for disabled visitors.
Dogs can enter on a leash no longer than 1.5 metres; bring hygiene bags and a muzzle. The rules prohibit camping, bringing in or consuming food, smoking, and video or photographic services unless specifically requested from the Culture Office.
Before you go: opening hours and access details can change, so check the official site before you go.
